After an enjoyable and productive life, and notwithstanding the challenges recently presented by a fight with cancer, James S. (Jim) McEachern, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home on May 31, 2011. Growing up in Atlanta, Jim attended E. Rivers Grammar School and North Fulton High School, graduated from Darlington High School, and continued his education at Emory University at Oxford and the University of Georgia. He was a proud member of the Delta Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity, and a Life Loyal Sig. His studies were interrupted by his service in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After returning from Korea, Jim began his banking career at Fulton National Bank in Atlanta. He joined his father a short time later as they began their tandem leadership of the Commercial & Exchange Bank in Bremen. Jim attended and graduated from L.S.U. Banking School in the late 60's, and by the late 70's, he had been elevated to the rank of Chairman of the Board. The bank's shareholders agreed to the terms and conditions of a purchase offer in 1984, and soon thereafter, the bank became a part of the former First Union Bank, from which he retired in 1985. Jim was a very successful banker who was blessed with a quick wit and charming personality. He was very involved for decades in supporting many local-area philanthropic activities and organizations. At one time, served as President of the local chapter of the Lions Club, the regional chapter of the Georgia Bulldog Club, and was a long-time volunteer and Treasurer for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. He was also a proud member of several Masonic organizations, including the former Fulton Lodge, which later merged with Palestine Lodge #486 of Atlanta. He was also a proud member of the Scottish Rite, Yaarab Temple, and the Royal Order of Jesters - Court #91 – all of Atlanta. Jim and his wife Nancy were loyal Georgia Bulldog football fans and were season ticket-holders for well over fifty years. They were also long-time members of the Bremen First United Methodist Church, Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrollton, and the Georgian Club in Atlanta. Jim was predeceased by his father - J.S. McEachern, Sr., mother - Martha Turner McEachern, and the wife, the love of his life for 50 years, Nancy Hughes McEachern. He is survived by daughter, Martha (Martie) McEachern Abney, and husband Jeffrey of Tallapoosa, son, James (Jimmy) Sterling McEachern, III, and wife Miriam (Mimi) of Marietta, daughter, Jeanne McEachern Hyder, and husband James of Augusta. He is also survived by his loving Grandchildren Laura Capes Oliver, and husband Eddie (Chip) Oliver of Commerce, Steve Sailors and Ginger Sailors of Bremen, Judson McEachern and Grace McEachern of Marietta, Kathleen Hyder and Martha Hyder of Augusta, Step-Grandchildren, Samuel Abney, Ellen Abney, and Peter Abney of Tallapoosa, and Great- Grandson, Tripp Oliver of Commerce. Jim is also survived by his life-long best friend, Raymond Inglett of Atlanta.
