Singleton Jackson (Thomas Singleton Jackson, Sr.), age 98, of Carrollton, passed away on January 1, 2009 following an extended illness. He was the co-owner of the former Jackson's Hardware which was located on Bradley Street and later Bankhead Highway until 1996. Mr. Jackson, born December 31, 1910, the only child of Hugh and Mary Walker Jackson, was a graduate of Carrollton High School where he played basketball. In his early years, he managed grocery stores for A and P Company in both Rockmart and Barnesville and was a charter member of the Rockmart Kiwanis Club. He served in the Air Force during World War II, on assignments in England, France, and Trinidad. On the death of his father-in-law Bruce Cumbie, Mr. Jackson and brother-in-law Willis Crawford assumed management of the Bruce Cumbie Store, which became Crawford and Jackson. He and his wife Virginia later purchased the business and renamed it Jackson's Hardware, and in the late sixties their son Tom became a partner. Mr. Jackson enjoyed working part-time in the store until age 86, alongside his wife Virginia. Mr. Jackson was proud to be a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church in Carrollton for over 60 years, where he served as Deacon and Church Clerk. He loved his church and was named Deacon Emeritus in May of 2005. He also was a Mason, having received his 50-year pin in 1986. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Virginia Cumbie Jackson; his son and daughter-in- law, Thomas Singleton Jackson, Jr. (Tom) and Dr. Judy Jackson; daughter, Mary Clo Jackson; two grandchildren, Avery Singleton Jackson and Hayley Senkbeil Jackson, all of Carrollton. Also surviving are several cousins, nieces and nephews. He was a devoted husband, father, and loving grandfather. He enjoyed his two grandchildren immensely and took pride in watching them grow. He enjoyed genealogy and spent many years working on his family history. He also enjoyed walking every day for years around Lake Carroll and First Tuesday Mall, where he stopped to visit with friends along the way. He was especially blessed with friends and customers who shopped at Jackson's Hardware over the years and with special caring neighbors. He treasured each of those friendships. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, January 4 at 4:00 pm at Martin Hightower Heritage Chapel with Dr. Jimmy Gentry and Dr. Howard Cobble officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, January 3 from 5:00-7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church, 150 Tabernacle Drive, Carrollton, GA 30117. Messages of condolences may be sent to www.martin-hightower.com.
