Obituary

Rev. Thomas Butler Stevenson of Bremen, left this world to enter into the glory of his Saviour, Jesus Christ, on Friday, September 16, 2011. He was born in Harrodsburg, Kentucky on May 28, 1929, son of the late Rev. William Amaziah Stevenson and Elizabeth Butler Stevenson. Rev. Stevenson was a graduate of Moody Bible Institute, Wheaton College and Southeastern Seminary. He served as youth and educational director at the First Baptist Church, Mayodan, NC and Mineral Springs Baptist Church, Winston Salem, NC. He, also, served as pastor of Ayersville Baptist Church. It was in Ayersville that he met his bride-to-be, Mary Rosalind Snell of Winston Salem. They were married on July 6, 1963, and shortly afterwards moved to Mableton, GA. He served as educational director at First Baptist Church there, also at First Baptist Church in Cedartown and First Baptist Church in Bremen. Rev. Stevenson was later called to serve as associational missionary in the Polk and Haralson Associations. He served the many Southern Baptist Churches in those counties for twenty years and retired in 1997. First Baptist Church of Bremen, then, invited him to work on an interim basis as educational director. He considered Christian Education of utmost importance and strove to teach and preach as needed until his death. He never met a stranger and loved to share jokes and funny stories wherever he went. He was very much loved by his family and friends and he loved them in return. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Elizabeth Stevenson, Ruth Cokely Molaschi; a brother, William Amaziah Stevenson, Jr.; a niece, Ellen Snell and a nephew, Michael Snell. Survivors include his wife, Mary Stevenson, Bremen; sons and daughter-in-law, Mark and Leslie Stevenson, Woodstock, John David Stevenson of Niceville, Florida and two grandchildren, Luke and Ariana Stevenson of Woodstock. Services were held Monday, September 19 at 1:00 PM from the Bremen First Baptist Church with Brother Herman Parker and Brother John McBride officiating. Music was furnished by Andy Fowler and the church choir accompanied by Sue Ezzell and Sara Calhoun. Andy Horton, Barry Smith, Cliff Coats, Bill Downey, Randy Pate and Luke Stevenson served as pallbearers.
