Aubrey Gene
Powell
May 4, 1945 — Jul 13, 2026
Aubrey Gene Powell, age 81, of Roopville, Georgia, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2026.
Born on May 4, 1945, in Sheffield, Alabama, Aubrey was the son of the late Clarence James Powell and Mamie Hester Powell. A proud veteran, he honorably served his country in the United States Army Reserve before beginning a long career as an electrician. As a member of IBEW Local 613, Aubrey dedicated many years to his trade, including time working on the Alaskan Pipeline, a chapter of his life he enjoyed talking about with family and friends.
Above all else, Aubrey was a family man. He shared 57 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Carolyn Huckaba Powell, until her passing last year. Their marriage was one built on faith, commitment, and unwavering love, and those who knew them admired the life they built together. While there is sadness in saying goodbye to Aubrey, there is comfort in knowing that he is once again reunited with Carolyn.
A faithful member of Midway Church, Aubrey lived a life grounded in his faith and devoted to those he loved. He never met a stranger and was happiest when surrounded by people. Whether sitting around telling stories, laughing over a game of Rook, or reminiscing about days gone by, Aubrey had a gift for making everyone feel welcome. His stories, quick wit, and easygoing personality made him someone people naturally gravitated toward.
When he wasn't spending time with family and friends, Aubrey could often be found outdoors, farming or fishing. He was an avid fan of Alabama football and rarely missed an opportunity to cheer on the Crimson Tide. On quieter days, he enjoyed watching classic westerns.
He leaves behind a loving family who will cherish his memory, including his daughter, Letha Certain of Summertown, Tennessee; his son and daughter-in-law, John Adam and Sherry Powell of Roopville; five beloved grandchildren: Paige Powell, Amber Powell, Sydney Powell, Dalton Certain, and Hannah Certain; brothers James Powell of Mount Brook, Alabama, and Franklin Powell of Bethpage, Tennessee; along with numerous extended family members and dear friends.
In addition to his beloved wife and parents, Aubrey was preceded in death by his sisters, Martha Powell, Mary Morgan, Marcelle Massey, and Faye White; and his brother, Howard Powell.
A memorial service celebrating Aubrey's life will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Martin & Hightower Heritage Chapel with Pastor Todd Wright and Pastor Barry Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the service.
Though his family will miss his stories, his laughter, and the steady presence he brought to every gathering, they are grateful for a life well lived and for the countless memories he leaves behind. His legacy of hard work, faith, kindness, and love for family will continue to live on in all who had the privilege of knowing him.
