He was deeply rooted in the community he called home, building a life filled with lasting friendships, a love of sports, and devotion to his family.
Mr. Christopher Johnson "John" Thomason, age 61, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, at his residence following a battle with cancer.
Born on December 22, 1964, in Carrollton, Georgia, John was the son of Ann Johnson and the late Bobby Thomason. A lifelong Carrollton resident, he was deeply rooted in the community he called home, building a life filled with lasting friendships, a love of sports, and devotion to his family.
A proud Carrollton Trojan, John graduated from Carrollton High School in 1983, where he distinguished himself as an exceptional three-sport athlete in football, basketball, and baseball. His talent, determination, and competitive spirit earned him numerous honors, including being named the 1983 County Baseball Player of the Year and his team's Most Valuable Player. As a pitcher, he helped lead the Trojans baseball team to the Final Four during his senior year. His accomplishments on the basketball court were equally memorable, including a remarkable nearly full-court shot at the halftime buzzer against Bowdon, a moment that remained part of Carrollton sports history. John's athletic success earned him a baseball scholarship to West Georgia College, where he was a four-year letterman and graduated in 1988 with a degree in business. In 2008, he was inducted into the Carrollton High School Athletic Hall of Fame, a fitting recognition of the legacy he had established as a Trojan.
John's love for sports continued long after his playing days, particularly his unwavering devotion to the Auburn Tigers. A passionate Auburn fan through every victory and defeat, he was able to enjoy the excitement of Auburn's field goal victory over Georgia on the Saturday before his passing, one final special memory for someone who loved the game so much.
The love he had for Julia was immeasurable, and being her dad was undoubtedly the role he cherished most.
A local business owner, John took pride in his work and in contributing to the community that had given him so much. He understood the importance of relationships and was known for his loyalty, generosity, and willingness to be there for the people he cared about. He was the kind of friend who stood by others through every season of life, and the friendships he cultivated were a testament to the man he was.
Above all, John's greatest pride and joy was his daughter, Julia. While he accomplished much on the athletic field and in his professional life, nothing meant more to him than being her father. The love he had for Julia was immeasurable, and being her dad was undoubtedly the role he cherished most. Their bond was one of the greatest blessings of his life and will remain an enduring part of his legacy.
John had been a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church since 1976, a congregation that had been part of his life for fifty years. His life was woven into the fabric of Carrollton through his church, his business, his athletic accomplishments, and the countless friendships he made along the way.
John will be remembered not simply for the games he won, the remarkable plays he made, or the business he built, but for the people whose lives were better because he was part of them. He leaves behind a legacy of loyalty, friendship, community involvement, and, most importantly, a father's unwavering love for his daughter.
John is survived by his beloved daughter, Julia Thomason; his mother, Ann Johnson; his siblings, Jay & Debbie Thomason, Amy & Danny Yates, and Bess Thomason; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Stewart & Bessie Thomason, and his maternal grandparents, Hugh & Sara Johnson Sr.
A memorial service celebrating John's life will be held on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 3:30 PM at Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church, with Pastor Shane Roberson officiating. Julia Thomason and Bryan Albright will share eulogies in his memory. Musical selections will be presented by Kirsten Hale. John's nephews, Copland Tate, Jay Thomason, Conner Thomason, Austin Yates, and Cody Yates, will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Martin & Hightower Funeral Home on Friday, October 23, 2026, from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
In honor of John's remarkable athletic legacy and his lifelong connection to the Carrollton community, the John Thomason Trojan Legacy Scholarship has been established through the Carrollton City Schools Education Foundation. The scholarship celebrates John's accomplishments as a Carrollton Trojan while helping future generations of students pursue their own opportunities for success. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the scholarship in John's memory at https://givebutter.com/ccsedfdn-scholarships-funds.
