Obituary

Harold Wayne Horton, affectionately known to friends and family as "Bear," passed away peacefully on Monday, February 10, 2025. He was born on May 29, 1959, in Carrollton, Georgia, to the late John Wayne Horton and Frances Magalene Morrow Horton, who instilled in him a strong work ethic and a love for music.

Harold graduated from Central High School in 1977, where he was known for his reserved personality and musical talent. After completing his education, he embarked on a career as a truck driver, a profession he excelled in for many years. He eventually retired from Heard County Concrete.

A true music man Bear developed his passion for playing the bass guitar at the young age of 9. He dedicated countless hours honing his craft, which led him to perform with various bluegrass, country, and gospel bands across Alabama and Georgia. His musical journey culminated in his well-deserved induction into the Atlanta Country Music Hall of Fame, a testament to his dedication and talent.

Beyond his musical pursuits, Harold was an avid outdoorsman with a diverse range of interests. He enjoyed coon hunting, where he spent countless nights in the woods with his faithful hounds. He also had a passion for showing dogs. An avid horseback rider, he found joy in connecting with nature and the animals he cherished. Additionally, Harold loved playing golf, often hitting the links with his girls, where they created lasting memories filled with laughter and competition.

However, the cornerstone of Harold's life was his family. He took immense pride in being a loving husband, a devoted father, and an exceptional grandfather. He approached his responsibility of nurturing a strong relationship between his children and grandchildren and Jesus with utmost seriousness. Each week, he led by example, ensuring that they attended church together, where they could deepen their faith and understanding of Christian teachings. Through his actions and devoted guidance, he aimed to instill in them the importance of a lifelong relationship with Jesus. His warmth, humor, and spirit profoundly impacted the lives of those around him. Harold will be greatly missed by all who knew him, leaving behind a legacy of love, music, and cherished memories.

He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, Suzanne Smith Horton; daughters & sons-in-law, Loren & Justin Mitchem and Courtney & Shane Bridges; sister & brother-in-law, Sharron & Robert Parrish; and granddaughters, Paisyn Mitchem, Karra Mitchem, Brinleigh Henderson, Layken Henderson, and Maggie Bridges. He also leaves behind his loyal companions, Tiny and Millie.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Pat & Pauline Horton; his maternal grandparents, Homer & Mary Morrow; and his grandson, Cade Mitchem.

A funeral service will honor and celebrate Harold's life on Friday, February 14, 2025, at 11:00 AM from Bethesda Baptist Church, with Pastor Randall Eidson, Pastor Tony Morris, and Pastor L.P. "Pat" Heuer officiating. Harold's body will be placed in the church at 10:00 AM on Friday morning and childcare will be provided in the church nursery during the service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery, with Pastor Jerry Wiggins and Pastor Chris King providing the committal. Robert Parrish, Shane Bridges, Gary Dalrymple, Samuel Dalrymple, Brian Morris, and Eddie Cook will serve as pallbearers. Joe Lee, Jerry Lee, Jeff Lee, Pat Albright, Tim Barnes, Jeff Merrell, and Ashley Duncan will be seated as honorary pallbearers.
