Obituary

James Larry Acuff Sr., age 84, of Douglasville, Georgia, passed away on January 12, 2025. He was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on July 30, 1940 to Bernard and Hazel Acuff, both of whom preceded him in death, along with his brothers Lowell and Donnie Acuff.

Larry is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Janet; his two children, James Acuff Jr. (Jim) and wife Loreen, and April Adams and husband Bryan; five grandchildren: James Acuff, Sam Acuff and his wife Rivian, Jackson Acuff and his wife Riley Jane, Amber Acree and her husband Jake, and Hannah Adams; and two great-grandchildren: Jace Acuff and Bella Rose Acree and step great-grandchild Raegan Massulo. He is also survived by numerous extended family and friends who will miss his warmth, kindness, and guidance.

Larry graduated from Tennessee Tech University with a degree in history and initially pursued a career as a middle school history teacher for two years. However, his true calling came in the form of preaching the Gospel. Over the span of 63 years, Larry dedicated his life to full time pulpit preaching in Tennessee, Michigan, and Georgia. His impact extended far beyond his local communities as he preached, conducted gospel meetings, lectureships, and individual Bible studies. What made "Brother Larry" (as he was affectionally called by many) distinctive as a preacher was his skill of using humor and his extraordinary memory of the scriptures. Larry also conducted hundreds of weddings, funerals, and spoke regularly on weekly radio and TV programs. At the time of retirement, he had recorded 700 tv programs that were broadcasted on GBN (Gospel Broadcasting Network) leaving behind a legacy of spiritual service that touched hearts near and far.

James

Beyond his ministry, Larry was a passionate enthusiast of presidential history, aviation, and sports; especially the Detroit Tigers and the Atlanta Braves. He would often be found striking up a conversation with anyone nearby, eager to connect and share his interests. Above all, Larry cherished his family. His love for them was evident in his every word and action. When spending time with his loved ones, he was often heard saying, "This is such a blessing and serendipity!" - a sentiment that reflected his joyful and grateful spirit.

As Larry is laid to rest and enters his eternal home with the Lord, the family is comforted by the same words that Larry often shared: "Y'all make yourself at home."
