Obituary

Johanna Bridget Canavan, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and devoted follower of Christ, passed peacefully into the arms of her Savior on the morning of July 27, 2025. She was 82 years old. She was born in New York, New York on January 26, 1943, daughter of the late Alexandar Lyng and the late Mary Costello Lyng. She was a member of Sweetwater Baptist Church in Douglasville, Georgia.

She is survived by her devoted husband of 60 years, Peter M. Canavan; her ten children: Susan McCallum(Cary); Sean Canavan(Suzanne); Daniel Canavan(Beth); James Canavan(Tracey); Linda Tew(James); Leam Canavan(Susan;) Chris Canavan(Brianna); Matthew Canavan(Kali) Elaina Bender(Clint) and Jonathan Canavan(Amber); twenty-seven grandchildren; sixteen great-grandchildren; two nieces and two nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Maureen Boyle and brother, James Lyng.

She was gentle, kind, and full of grace. She gave everything to her family and, in return, created a legacy that will stretch far beyond generations.

All ten of her children grew into loving, successful adults. Each one happily married, a testament to the example she set. Four of her sons became ministers, dedicating their lives to preaching the Gospel. Johanna herself was a devoted Christian who read her Bible regularly and often spoke about entering heaven one day. There is no doubt that she had a deep and personal relationship with Jesus Christ — and that He greeted her joyfully upon her arrival in eternity.

The life she lived and the family she built are among the greatest accomplishments anyone could hope to achieve. Her strength, her sacrifices, and her unwavering love have shaped a family rooted in faith and love — and her legacy will endure forever, both on earth and in heaven.

The family will receive friends at Sweetwater Baptist Church on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m.

The funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. with Reverend Darryl Jones officiating. Sean Canavan, Daniel Canavan, James Canavan, Leam Canavan, Christopher Canavan, Matthew Canavan and Jonathan Canavan will serve as pallbearers.

Burial service will be at 11:00am on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Arlington Cemetery in Sandy Springs, Georgia.
