Joyce
Mcgee
Sep 27, 1933 — Feb 19, 2025
Joyce McGee, of Carrollton, Georgia, age 91, passed into the gates of her Savior after a long illness, on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, surrounded by her family.
She was born in Augusta, Georgia, on September 27, 1933, the daughter of the late Richard Frank Walker and Janie Masters Walker. As her parents aged, she dedicated herself to helping her sisters care for them.
On January 23, 1954, she was united in marriage to Melvin Eugene McGee of Carrollton, GA. Joyce was the mother of four children: Runette Linville (David) of Alcolu, SC; Ed Travelstead (the late Susan Travelstead) of Buford, GA; Mike McGee (Rebecca) of Carrollton, GA; and Robin Awtrey (Mike) of Lutts, TN.
She was a loving mother, granny, and great-grandmother. Joyce is survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews. She is also survived by two sisters: Frankie Maffei (the late Mike Maffei) of San Antonio, FL, and Linda Evers (the late Jack Evers) of Canton, GA.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her husband Melvin E. McGee, her sister Barbara Pollard of Temple, GA, and her only brother Richard A. Walker (Judy) of Douglasville, GA.
Joyce was a co-owner of McGee's Bakery before retiring in 1983, where she decorated beautiful cakes, cookies, and cake squares. She famously decorated the bi-centennial cake for the town of Carrollton, Georgia, in 1976. Her artistic decorating skills brought joy to many, and she delighted in creating stunning birthday and wedding cakes for both children and adults. Her grandson, Cliff McGee of Carrollton, GA, has continued this tradition of artistry at McGee's Bakery.
Beyond working and raising four children, Joyce was a Brownie troop leader for several years. She was also a dedicated Georgia Tech football fan, and as a younger woman, she could often be seen at most of the home games in Atlanta, GA, supporting the team she loved.
Joyce will be missed and cherished forever by everyone who knew her. She was known for her giving heart, always eager to share with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Every Christmas, she ensured that every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild received gifts, and she was not happy until all the presents were purchased and wrapped under the Christmas tree. Joyce loved the Christmas season and truly understood the meaning of that special time of year.
A funeral service will honor and celebrate Joyce's life on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at 12:00 PM at Martin & Hightower Funeral Home, with Mike Awtrey officiating. Interment will follow in Carroll Memory Gardens, with Richard Linville, David Linville, Andy Travelstead, Gabe McGee, Cliff McGee, and Mike Awtrey serving as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends at Martin & Hightower on Saturday from 11:00 AM until the hour of service.
