She was born in Bremen, Georgia, on July 25, 1928, the youngest of 12 children to the late Lloyd Camp Jones and Anna Estelle Jones. Violet was preceded in death by all her siblings; her cherished husband, G. Ray Newman; her son, Joe Lann Newman; and great-granddaughter, Nicolette Martie.

They began dating and, after Ray served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, they married and built a life together, raising two sons and a daughter.
