Obituary

Virginia "Ginny" Mae Winstead, age 87, of Carrollton, Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Ginny was born on February 13, 1939, in Hazard, Kentucky, the daughter of the late Arnold Lawson and Lena Pratt Lawson. She was a graduate of Bellville High School in Bellville, Michigan, and went on to devote many years of her life to the work of the North American Mission Board, where she faithfully served until her retirement in 1999.

For Ginny, however, some of the most meaningful parts of her life could never be measured by a career or accomplishments. She was, above all, a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a proud grandmother and great-grandmother. She and her husband, Dr. Louie Gene Winstead, shared 68 years of marriage, a life built together through love, faith, family, and many years of ministry. As the wife of a pastor, Ginny faithfully walked alongside her husband throughout his ministry, sharing in the joys and responsibilities that came with a life of service to others.

Her faith was an important part of who she was. Ginny was an active member of First Baptist Church of Carrollton, where she found fellowship, friendship, and opportunities to continue serving others. Her years with the North American Mission Board and her life alongside her husband in ministry reflected a heart that valued faith and service.

Following her retirement, Ginny and Louie enjoyed traveling and camping together, making wonderful memories as they explored new places and experienced many adventures along the way. She also had a special affection for her pets, but most of all, she treasured time spent with the people she loved. The life and family she and Louie built together remain a beautiful reflection of a life well lived.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Dr. Louie Gene Winstead; her children, Tim & Jefflyn Winstead, and Mark & Degi Winstead; grandchildren, Devan & Nilisha Winstead, Ethan Winstead, Madison Winstead, Caroline & Brad Santasuosso, and Chandler & Thomas Davis; nine great-grandchildren; and her sister, Lu Cathey.

A memorial service celebrating Ginny's life will be held Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 11:00 AM from Martin & Hightower with Dr. Bob Whitmire and Charles Stewart officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9:00 AM until the hour of service.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt appreciation to the staff of Gentiva Hospice for the kindness, care, and compassion shown to Ginny and their family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Gentiva Hospice in her memory.
